Hoyer Announces Federal Funding for Homeless Veterans in Southern Maryland

Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) today announced $84,280 in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to provide housing for homeless veterans in Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary's counties. The funding is provided through the HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) Program which combines rental assistance from HUD with case management and clinical services provided by VA.

"I'm pleased that the Calvert County Housing Authority will receive this funding to support the housing needs of homeless veterans in Southern Maryland," said Congressman Hoyer. "It's our responsibility to do what we can to help our veterans get back on their feet, into safe, stable housing, and into the civilian workforce. I'm proud to participate in HUD's annual Point-in-Time survey each year which provides federal agencies with information about the homeless population in our communities. The survey's results can lead to funding from programs like HUD-VASH. I want to thank the community stakeholders, volunteers, and the Southern Maryland Housing Authorities on their extraordinary work to promote greater access to affordable housing for veterans in Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary's counties."

In the HUD-VASH program, VA Medical Centers (VAMCs) assess veterans experiencing homelessness before referring them to local housing agencies for these vouchers. This is the first round of HUD-VASH grants awarded to Southern Maryland from Fiscal Year 2015 appropriations. In December 2014, Congressman Hoyer announced nearly $200,000 in federal funding to provide housing for homeless veterans in Southern Maryland
