Sarbanes Statement on Israeli Independence Day

Congressman John Sarbanes (D-Md.) issued the following statement in recognition of Israeli Independence Day:

"I want to wish the people of Israel a joyous Independence Day. On Yom Ha'atzmaut, we celebrate the achievement of the Jewish people in establishing a modern and prosperous Jewish state.

"From the moment that Israel -- under the leadership of future Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion -- declared its independence sixty-seven years ago, America has stood firmly at Israel's side. Over the years, our two nations' shared values of democracy, justice and freedom, in addition to our steadfast commitment to Israel's security, have bound us deeply together.

"On Yom Ha'atzmaut, let's rejoice in Israel's story -- a story of triumph over persecution, a story of resilience in the face of terror. And let's celebrate the longstanding and fruitful bond between our two nations."
