Jordan: DOJ Decision to not Seek Criminal Contempt Charges Against Lois Lerner 'Wrong'

Statement

Date: April 1, 2015
Issues: Legal

Congressman Jim Jordan (R-Urbana) made the following comments about the Justice Department's decision to not seek criminal contempt charges against former IRS official Lois Lerner:

"As one of his final acts as U.S. attorney for Washington, D.C., Ronald Machen used his power as a political weapon to undermine the rule of law. Mr. Machen was legally bound to convene a grand jury, but instead he ignored his obligation and unilaterally decided to ignore the will of the House of Representatives. He and the Justice Department have given Lois Lerner cover for her failure to account for her actions at the IRS. This is wrong, and a great example of why so many Americans distrust their government.

"The American people deserve justice. They deserve to know the truth about how the IRS systematically targeted their First Amendment rights. Instead, Mr. Machen and the Justice Department continue to trample on that right and provide Ms. Lerner cover in concealing the truth."
