Ways & Means Oversight Subcommittee Focuses on Medicare Fraud Prevention

Press Release

The Ways and Means Subcommittee on Oversight today held a hearing to examine the federal government's use of data analysis to stop Medicare fraud. U.S. Congressman Kenny Marchant (TX-24), a member of the Oversight Subcommittee, issued the following statement after the hearing:

"Medicare fraud and improper payments cost taxpayers billions of dollars each year. This poses a growing threat to the solvency of Medicare and is a serious concern for my constituents. As addressed during today's hearing, the government's current prevention methods often allow criminals to stay one step ahead. The administration must take a better approach to stop the abuse of Medicare and its beneficiaries. It can start by fully integrating data-driven fraud prevention methods that are being used with great success in the private sector. Americans work too hard to have their tax dollars lost to rampant and avoidable waste."

Today's hearing consisted of two panels. The first was comprised of administration officials who testified on current efforts to combat Medicare fraud. The second panel included witnesses who have private sector experience in fraud detection and prevention.
