U.S. Senator John McCain (R-AZ) released the following statement on co-sponsoring the Secure the Border First Act of 2015, which was introduced in the Senate yesterday by Senators Ron Johnson (R-WI), John Cornyn (R-TX) and Jeff Flake (R-AZ) to serve as a first step to securing our borders. This legislation is the Senate companion to H.R. 399, the Secure Our Borders First Act of 2015, introduced in the House of Representatives by Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX) last week.

"The people of Arizona expect and deserve a secure border, and this legislation requires the Department of Homeland Security to obtain the advanced technology and manpower to get the job done," said Senator McCain. "The bill requires DHS to gain and maintain full situational awareness and operational control of our border and includes the sector-by-sector infrastructure requirements and legal authorities needed to carry out its plan, working in close coordination with border state governors. President Obama's executive actions on immigration have obviously set back important bipartisan efforts to address these issues, but that will not stop Congress from moving forward to secure the border -- the required first step in any reform effort. I look forward to working with my colleagues and DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson on these vital issues for Arizona and the nation."
