Pete Sessions Introduces the Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act of 2015

Statement

Date: March 27, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions (R-TX-32), Chairman of the House Rules Committee and a Member of House Republican Leadership, today released the following statement regarding the Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act of 2015 (CHIA) that he recently introduced in the House:

"At a time when college tuition has sky-rocketed and American families are struggling to ensure their children receive a sound education, it is critical that we provide families some relief to make college more affordable. That is why I have reintroduced the Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act of 2015. This legislation would eliminate an arbitrary distinction in existing tax law that prevents all not-for-profit entities from using tax deductible charitable contributions to build, maintain, or improve their not-for-profit student housing.

"Currently several hundred thousand college students nationwide live in not-for-profit student housing and many of these facilities do not have the means available to make necessary safety and structural improvements. The Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act of 2015 has garnered strong bipartisan support for the past 12 years and I urge my colleagues to support this legislation once again to give students the opportunity to live in safe conditions and make college more affordable."
