Rep. Bonamici Urges House to Pass Budget that Supports Working Families

Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (OR-01) made the following statement in response to the passage of the House Republicans' FY2016 Budget.

"Working Americans are the engine of our economy, and investments we make in them help the country on the road to full economic recovery. But instead of investing in working families, the majority's budget slashes programs like nutrition assistance, Medicare benefits, and Social Security; all programs that help lift the vulnerable out of poverty. The majority's budget also drastically underfunds public education and maintenance of our highways and bridges, and cuts student loan aid. These investments lead to long-term economic growth and prosperity, and should be strengthened not cut.

"Our country has always been a place where everyone has an opportunity to succeed. The majority's budget eliminates opportunities and does not reflect our nation's values. It gives people fewer options to help them overcome difficult circumstances. Working parents will have less support to send their children to college and save for their retirement.

"The Democratic alternative budget I supported reforms the tax code to help put more money in workers' paychecks; it invests in construction projects to not only create jobs, but strengthen our country's transportation network; and it strengthens vital support services like nutrition assistance and Social Security. The alternative budget would help grow the economy through investments in scientific research, energy technologies, advanced manufacturing, and public safety. It protects Medicare and Social Security and increases support for education programs from early childhood to affordable college."
