Rep. Bonamici Statement in Response to House Passage of Medicare Reimbursement Formula

Statement

Date: March 26, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (OR-01) made the following statement in response to the passage of the House bill to replace the formula for Medicare reimbursement, also known as the Sustainable Growth Rate.

"For decades our country has provided older Americans with stable, secure health care. It is part of our country's commitment to our seniors -- that they do not grow old in poverty. This bill to stabilize the Medicare repayment formula means older Americans will not be denied affordable, quality care. Without this fix, Medicare recipients could be turned away from their doctors and forced to go without treatment. Instead, this bill encourages efficiency among doctors while strengthening the quality of care -- especially for low-income seniors. These provisions aim to improve performance while lowering costs, which is critical for the long-term implementation of health care for all. The bill also secures the extension of the Children's Health Insurance Program, which provides health care for low-income children. Although not perfect, this compromise approach to update the sustainable growth rate formula will benefit seniors and children, and I applaud its passage."
