Hensarling Statement on DHS Appropriations

Statement

Date: March 3, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Jeb Hensarling (TX-05), chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, released the following statement after voting against a bill passed by the House of Representatives to fund the Department of Homeland Security (H.R. 240):

"President Obama's executive action on immigration is unconstitutional and must not be allowed to stand. While the courts have halted it from moving forward for now, this is potentially a temporary reprieve. That is why I am deeply disappointed that Senate Democrats were unwilling to put action behind their criticism of the president's illegal power grab and join Congressional Republicans in sending a bill to President Obama's desk that would have completely shut down the president's unlawful executive action. At its core, this is not a fight about immigration policy, but instead a fight that goes to the foundation of our Republic and the Constitutional principle of co-equal but separate branches of government. While I strongly support the mission of the Department of Homeland Security and believe it is critical that it has the resources it needs to protect the homeland, I cannot in good conscience vote for a bill that does not put us on a path to stop President Obama's unconstitutional executive amnesty."
