Press Release

Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Foreign Affairs

House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) will host President Obama and Prime Minister (Taoiseach) Enda Kenny of Ireland at the United States Capitol on Tuesday, March 17, for the annual Friends of Ireland Luncheon.

The event, which marks Prime Minister Kenny's fifth St. Patrick's visit to the Capitol, will include speeches by the three leaders.

"Every day, we hope for the luck of the Irish, but on St. Patrick's Day, we're fortunate enough to have the leader of the Irish as well," Speaker Boehner said. "It's an honor to continue this great tradition that celebrates the Irish people, the history, and the values we share."

The Friends of Ireland tradition began with President Ronald Reagan and Speaker Tip O'Neill, who hosted the first luncheon on March 17, 1983. The first recorded celebration of St. Patrick's Day at the Capitol dates back to 1884, when members of Congress wore green ribbons on their lapels.

In anticipation of last year's event, Speaker Boehner released this video featuring rare photos of President Reagan, Speaker O'Neill, and all the presidents, speakers, and prime ministers who have taken part in the Friends of Ireland luncheon over the years.
