Rep. Grothman Statement on Education Committee Action on H.R. 5

Statement

U.S. Rep. Glenn Grothman (R-Campbellsport), a member of the House Education and Workforce Committee, released the following statement on the committee's action on H.R. 5 today:

"The No Child Left Behind program has been failing our children for more than a decade. It vastly increased federal involvement in education with disastrous results. As an outspoken critic of the program since President Bush and Senator Kennedy first wrote it in 2001, I'm glad that the legislation before the committee begins to reduce the federal footprint in education and rightfully restore power to the states and local communities. Parents and teachers across Wisconsin are far better at making the right decisions for their schools than bureaucrats at the Department of Education in Washington, D.C.

"The bill provides more flexibility to state and local officials by eliminating and consolidating nearly 70 unnecessary and ineffective federal programs and cutting the number of federal education bureaucrats. I'm confident and hopeful that this bill will lead to real education reform and save taxpayer dollars in the future.

"I'm also dismayed by the Democrats' amendments to the bill. Instead of offering reforms and constructive ideas, all that they provided was more spending programs and divisive social issues."
