U.S. Congressman Brian Babin (R-Woodville) was in town on Friday. Babin was on a tour of House District 36 to meet with constituents, and among his stops was the East Texas Pregnancy Help Center here in Jasper.

When asked about President Barack Obama's recent State of the Union Address in which Obama said that global warming and climate change was the biggest threat that the country faces, Babin said "I could not differ more with the president when he says global warming and climate change are the biggest threats that we have".

Babin said, in his opinion, the biggest threats to the country are the unsecure border, the $18 trillion dollar debt, terrorist organizations, and a president which, he says, ignores the rule of law and repeatedly violates the Constitution. "Mr. Obama cannot rule by fiat, and that is exactly what he is trying to do, and a good example is him just taking out his pen and signing an executive order that's going to grant amnesty to over 5 million people who came here illegally, and pay for it with the monies and fees that have been paid in to our government coffers by legal immigrants" said Babin.

Babin also weighed in on a project that could provide thousands of jobs for a large swath of the country, including here in southeast Texas, but may not happen if the president so chooses. Babin said "Keystone Pipeline is a good example. It passed overwhelmingly in the House, 39 Democrats voted for it, they want Keystone, it's going to provide 42,000 new jobs, and during this recession that's great, that's a huge deal. It's went to the Senate, it's come back to us, we've repassed it, it's now on the desk of the president, he's threatening to veto it".

Babin went on to say that studies have shown that the Keystone Pipeline would not be detrimental to the environment, but he says Obama is trying to please a small segment of his base who are against it, which he tabbed "the environmental wing".

Babin also made stops in Buna, Orange, and other cities in the district.
