Vela Statement on Violence in Mexico

Statement

Date: Feb. 6, 2015
Location: Brownsville, TX

Today, U.S. Representative Filemon Vela, D-Brownsville, released the following statement:

"I don't understand what it is going to take for the Administrations in Mexico City and Washington, D.C., to take action to address the violence in Tamaulipas. More killings? More kidnappings? More missing Americans?

"Once again, I ask both Administrations to move swiftly to create the same special secure economic zones on the U.S.-Mexico border that President Enrique Peña Nieto has proposed in the States of Guerrero, Oaxaca and Chiapas. The prevalence of violence in Tamaulipas requires concrete action on the part of the Mexican government. The United States should exercise its maximum diplomatic might to spur a full blown response to what is rapidly becoming an international crisis."
