Catherine Caine, a teacher at Waikiki Elementary School, has been nominated for the prestigious 2015 National Teacher of the Year Award. She joins three other distinguished educators, from Alabama, Indiana and Texas, as the final nominees for the award.

"I would like to extend my warmest congratulations and mahalo to Catherine Caine and the other finalists of the National Teacher of the Year Award for all their hard work and tremendous achievements," Congressman Takai said.

The National Teacher of the Year program not only identifies outstanding teachers throughout the country and recognizes their efforts, but also empowers these educators to participate in education policy discussions, from the state level to national level.

"I am honored to represent a state with a finalist in the National Teacher of the Year program," Takai said. "Public schools educate the majority of our keiki, and among the biggest influences in these students' lives are their teachers. I want to ensure that public education and support for the educators of our future generations remain priorities for our state and our country."

The recipient of the award will be recognized by President Barack Obama in a White House ceremony to be held in the spring.
