Congressman Kennedy Statement on President's AUMF

Statement

Date: Feb. 12, 2015
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Defense

Congressman Joe Kennedy III released the following statement in response to the President's proposed authorization of military force against ISIL.

"Any military strategy to combat the serious threat posed by ISIL must have Congressional authorization and oversight. While the President's proposed AUMF is a welcome starting point in this long overdue process, its failure to clearly define the parameters of this mission is concerning. Most significantly, by keeping in place the 2001 AUMF it continues to allow an open-ended engagement of our men and women in uniform with little accountability. There are few places where our system's checks and balances are more sacred than when it comes to military conflict. I look forward to a thorough debate on this authorization in the weeks ahead."
