Lance: A Full Workweek Means A Full Paycheck

Press Release

Date: Jan. 8, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Leonard Lance (NJ-07) today joined a strong bipartisan majority in the House of Representatives in passing H.R. 30, the "Save American Workers Act," which would restore the traditional definition of full-time employment to 40 hours per week under Obamacare.

"For decades, employers have used the 40-hour work week as a standard for workforce management," said Lance following passage of the bill by a vote of 252-172. "Obamacare, however, threatens this standard by entangling many small businesses in red tape and hurting their employees' take home pay. Today the House has acted to protect the 40-hour workweek because a full 40 hour workweek means a full paycheck."

The 7th District lawmaker has long supported restoring the traditional 40-hour workweek under Obamacare. Last spring, Lance recounted the story of a young person from Basking Ridge, New Jersey who was told he could only work 29 hours a week at a grocery store. Despite the company's wanting him to work more -- and pay him more -- it could not permit employees to exceed the health care law's definition of "full time status."

House passage of H.R. 30 comes on the heels of action earlier this week on H.R. 22, the "Hire More Heroes Act," which helps small businesses grow and veterans get jobs by excluding veterans from the employer mandate threshold if they already have health care through TRICARE or the VA. The House passed H.R. 22 on January 6 by a vote of 412 to 0. Both H.R. 22 and H.R. 30 are expected to be considered in the U.S. Senate next week.

"Ultimately, we will only be able to fix our broken health care system by repealing and replacing Obamacare. But until that time, this week's actions in the House will help employers, employees and our veterans from the particularly harmful parts of the President's health care law," concluded Lance.
