U.S. Senator Roy Blunt (Mo.) co-sponsored two bills this week to protect people in Missouri and across America from partisan abuses and political targeting by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The move comes after the Obama administration faced harsh criticism for earlier attempts by the IRS to inappropriately target and apply excessive scrutiny to the applications of conservative groups applying for 501(c)(4) tax-exempt status.

The first bill was introduced by U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (Texas) to prohibit IRS employees from intentionally targeting individuals or groups based on their political views. The second bill, the Stop Targeting of Political Beliefs by the IRS Act, was introduced by U.S. Senators Jeff Flake (Ariz.) and Pat Roberts (Kan.) to prevent further IRS targeting of 501(c)(4) organizations.

"People in Missouri and nationwide are rightly concerned about the Obama Administration's continued over-reach," said Blunt. "I am proud to join Senators Cruz, Flake, and Roberts in co-sponsoring these two important bills to prevent the IRS from attacking Americans' First Amendment rights."
