Oregon's Senator Jeff Merkley released the following statement after the Obama administration announced new steps toward dramatically cutting methane emissions over the next decade:

"The danger that methane poses to our climate is real and potent. With fracking -- a notorious source of methane leaks -- on the rise, we should all be concerned about the skyrocketing amounts of methane pollution in our air. I fully support the administration's decision to move forward on cutting methane emissions, and I hope they will deliver a strong rule that takes on pollution from fracking operations, where we see the most urgent and rapidly growing problems. Methane pollution is one of the worst offenders when it comes to the global warming that threatens Oregon's rural economy, and taking it on will both help our climate and make our air cleaner, cutting down on asthma attacks and other public health threats. A strong rule will help save jobs and save lives, and I urge the administration to act without delay."
