Today, Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02) voted in support of H.R. 161, the Natural Gas Pipeline Permitting Reform Act.

"Across the country, utility bills are rising, in part due to outdated and insufficient infrastructure that carries our energy resources," said Congressman Guthrie. "By streamlining the rules for our federal permitting process, we can ensure that natural gas is flowing to consumers more quickly and safely."

H.R. 161 will amend the Natural Gas Act so that the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) must approve or deny any pipeline construction project within 12 months of receiving the project's completed application. The bill will also require any other agency responsible for issuing a federal permit to approve or deny the required certificate within 90 days of FERC issuing its final environmental review of the project. This bill mirrors legislation from the previous Congress, which passed with bipartisan support.

"Natural gas is an abundant domestic energy source that we are still not taking advantage of by fully utilizing its potential. Last winter many parts of the country, including Kentucky, faced propane shortages due to insufficient pipeline networks. Families and job creators could benefit greatly from this reform and see real savings," added Congressman Guthrie.
