Carson Statement on Black History Month

Statement

Date: Feb. 1, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman André Carson released the following statement today in recognition of National African American History Month, which begins today.

"This February we recognize the important contributions that African Americans have made and continue to make in shaping our state and country's identity. This month-long celebration is a time for all Americans to learn more about the history of African Americans, from American patriot Crispus Attucks to President Barrack Obama.

"While Black History Month helps us learn more about the contributions African Americans have made to our society and recognize the progress that's been made toward our nation's promise of equality, we know there are still barriers to creating opportunity. Despite our progress we still face obstacles at the voting booth and significant struggles to achieve economic, health, and educational equality.

"This month, I ask my friends and neighbors to not only reflect on our history but to continue pushing toward a better future where all Americans are treated equally."
