Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) released the following statement today applauding the US Labor Department's proposed updates to sex discrimination guidelines. The guidelines apply to companies that have federal contracts and subcontracts, which collectively employ many millions of people. DeLauro is the senior Democrat on the subcommittee responsible for funding the Labor Department.

"These guidelines are long overdue for an update, having never been revised since they were first released in 1970. Since then women's paychecks have become a necessity for American families, not a luxury to supplement their husband's pay. These changes reflect that reality and will go a long way towards reducing discrimination based on pregnancy, gender identity, caregiving responsibilities, or just the fact that they are a woman. Secretary Perez should implement a strong final rule in a timely manner so women who work for federal contractors and subcontractors will finally be on a level playing field with their male colleagues."

DeLauro is the author of the Paycheck Fairness Act, which would put teeth in the Equal Pay Act to close the gender-based wage gap. She is also a cosponsor of the Pregnant Worker Fairness Act and the Employment Non-Discrimination Act.
