Date: Dec. 23, 2014
Location: Baton Rouge, LA

Today, Governor Bobby Jindal issued the following statement after severe weather moved through Louisiana, causing a tornado to touch down in Amite, Louisiana in Tangipahoa Parish.

Governor Jindal said, "After today's severe weather, our hearts go out to those families who now have damaged homes just two days before Christmas. We're continuing to work hand-in-hand with local officials to make sure they have what they need in the aftermath of this storm, and we will continue to support them until this community has recovered. Thankfully, there have been no injuries reported as a result of the storm, and for that we are grateful. This tornado and severe weather underscore the importance of having a game plan for you and your family -- which is why we continue to urge everyone to hope for the best but prepare for the worst when it comes to planning for an emergency."

The Governor said GOHSEP officials continue to be on the ground as the area is cleaned up, and the state stands ready to assist the people of Tangipahoa Parish and those across Louisiana who have been impacted by this severe storm. The GOHSEP Crisis Action Team has been activated to monitor the conditions throughout the evening and will continue to respond to the impact of this severe weather system.

According to GOHSEP, there have been no requests for state assistance at this time by parish governments. However hail, power outages, downed trees and power lines have been reported in Southwest and Southeast Louisiana. Crews are currently working to clear these roads and restore power.

In Southeast Louisiana, Tangipahoa Emergency Preparedness Director Dawson Primes reports an estimated 15 homes received damage. Half the homes are categorized as receiving major damage, and parish officials are on the ground to support these families.

GOHSEP Director Kevin Davis reminds everyone, "These types of storms ahead of a cold front can be dangerous, and today is a great example of why it is so important to have a plan prepared. We stand ready to assist and will continue monitoring this weather system, and we urge the community to monitor any warnings from local officials or media."
