Press Release

Date: Nov. 19, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

Today, U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Chairman of the Subcommittee on the Middle East and North Africa, made the following statement following the passage of H.R. 3583, the Malala Yousafzai Scholarship Act, a bill she authored to increase the amount of available merit-based scholarships for young women in Pakistan.

Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:

"As a former Florida certified teacher, I know the value of education and how it can positively impact the lives of students and their families. Young women in Pakistan should not be left in the educational dark and should have the same opportunities to work for a better future as anyone else. Only through encouraging and working for expanded education in places like Pakistan can we effectively combat radical Islamic groups like the Taliban."
