Rep. Henry A. Waxman Statement on the US Contribution to the Green Climate Fund

Statement

Date: Nov. 14, 2014

Today Ranking Member Waxman released the following statement in response to the news that President Obama will announce a $3 billion U.S. contribution to the Green Climate Fund:

"This has been a landmark week for action on climate change. First, the U.S. and China announced a historic breakthrough on emissions. And now, the Administration is making a $3 billion pledge to the Green Climate Fund to help developing countries reduce their contribution and prepare for the worst impacts of climate change.

"Two of the biggest impediments to an international climate agreement in Paris next year were overcoming China's recalcitrance and providing funding to help developing countries reduce their emissions. In one week, President Obama has taken on both challenges. He has forged an alliance with China and made a major commitment to help developing countries. The President is showing game-changing leadership.

"History may look back and say this week was the turning point on climate.

"The world has been waiting decades for the United States and China to reach an understanding on climate. Now that moment has arrived and a big pledge to the Green Climate Fund has been delivered. The road to an international agreement in Paris next year just got a lot shorter and smoother.

"Momentum for action on climate is growing around the world. Today's announcement is another big boost to these efforts."
