Statement

Issues: Foreign Affairs

"I am horrified and outraged by the senseless murders of worshipers in Jerusalem today, and I condemn those who brought violence into a place meant for peaceful reflection and prayer. I offer my deepest condolences to those who lost their lives in this cruel attack, in addition to their families and loved ones and I hope for the speedy and full recovery of those who were injured.

This attack has shocked people around the world. Both Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Chairman Mahmoud Abbas have spoken out against this violence. The United States continues to stand with those leaders and our Israeli brothers and sisters against these senseless acts of terror, and we remain as committed as ever to the protection of Israel and those who live there.

I strongly support Secretary of State John Kerry's insistence that tensions in the region need to be de-escalated. I encourage the leaders to work constructively to promote peace and stability for all who live in the region.

My heart goes out to those who have been killed and injured in this horrible event. I am sure that the United States will provide whatever assistance is required to fully investigate the incident, and to make every effort to prevent similar events from occurring."
