Edwards Statement Commemorating Veterans Day

Statement

Date: Nov. 10, 2014
Issues: Veterans

Dear Friends,

As we commemorate the 95th Veterans Day, our nation gathers to salute 22 million veterans across the country for their service, valor, and sacrifice. From our nation's birth, Americans have fought and died to strengthen our democracy, preserve our freedom, and protect our most sacred values. On this day, we reaffirm our promise to support our veterans and their families, not just by words but with action.

As thousands of service members return home, unfortunately, far too many of them struggle during this difficult period as they transition to civilian life. Many lack access to timely health care and benefits, gainful employment, and housing. No veteran should have to fight for access to health care and other benefits to which they are entitled for their service to this nation. That's why my colleagues and I passed, and President Obama signed into law, H.R. 3230, the Veterans Access, Choice and Accountability Act, which allows veterans to see private doctors outside the VA system if they experience long wait times or live more than 40 miles from a VA facility. The new law also provides the VA the necessary resources to hire the doctors, nurses and other medical staff it needs to address these problems over the long term. It is a good step forward, but there remains more work to be done.

As the daughter of a career service member, I know the dedication of our veterans is unparalleled. The upcoming 114th Congress must match that dedication by putting aside our differences and coming together to honor and care for those who have given so much. It is long overdue to make certain that veterans receive the care and benefits they deserve in a timely fashion. I expect nothing less and neither should our veterans and their families.

On a personal note, I honor my father John and my brother John, who both served and sacrificed for this nation. I join a grateful nation as we pay tribute to all those who have served and sacrificed on this Veterans Day. Let us renew our vow to ensuring that all veterans and their families receive the care they have earned and deserve. And to all of our nation's veterans, thank you for your service and your sacrifice.

Sincerely,

Donna
