Hoyer Statement on US-China Climate Change Agreement

Statement

Date: Nov. 12, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement after President Obama and President Xi of China announced an agreement to combat climate change:

"In reaching this important agreement to combat climate change, the United States and China have committed to work together in an ambitious way to address the serious problem of carbon pollution. We share this Earth, and our children and grandchildren will share its future, and we owe it to them to work together to reduce carbon pollution by promoting greater energy efficiency, using more renewable and low-carbon energy sources, and investing in the manufacture of less-polluting technologies.

"I applaud efforts by the Obama Administration to work bilaterally with China and multilaterally through the United Nations and other organizations to make sure that America is leading the way in addressing climate change, which -- if left unchecked -- could have dangerous repercussions for our economy, our farmers, and our people's health. I hope that this significant agreement will spur other nations to make meaningful commitments to curb carbon pollution at the UN Climate Conference in Paris next year. I also urge the Republican-led Congress to abandon their efforts to roll back environmental protections and instead work with the Administration over the coming months to make sure America meets its emissions reduction commitments and invests in a greener economy that creates new jobs here at home while protecting our planet for the generations that will inherit it from us."
