Grant Lally Denounces Bill de Blasio's Plan to Eliminate Merit Selection for Specialized Schools

Statement

Date: Oct. 30, 2014

Long Island, New York: Grant Lally, the Republican nominee for Congress in New York's Third District, released the following statement regarding Mayor Bill de Blasio's plan to eliminate merit selection for New York City's specialized schools:

"I want to express my clear support for merit selection for the specialized schools in the City of New York. Merit selection has helped to create a truly excellent system of schools. Merit selection ensures that admissions are based upon the hard work of dedicated students, not on political connections, cronyism, or racial quotas. Through the hard work of parents, students, teachers, and administrators, New York City has developed some of the top schools in the country-schools such as Staten Island Tech, Townsend Harris, Stuyvesant, Hunter College High School, Brooklyn Tech, and Bronx Science.

"Mayor de Blasio's attacks on charter schools and merit selection are truly monstrous. In an increasingly competitive world, we need to train our best and brightest minds to innovate and excel. In addition, the direct attack on Asian-American families, who exceed the "racial quota' that de Blasio wants to impose under the pretext of "diversity,' will massively hurt Asian-American children. It is a racist anti-Asian policy that has no place in a civilized country. When I get to Congress, I will be a strong voice for merit selection, as well as school choice and education reform."
