Shays Reaction to State of the Union

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Christopher Shays (R-CT) made the following statement about the State of the Union address:

"Our country faces two primary challenges: making our country more fiscally sound and securing our homeland.

"We need to get our financial house in order, reduce our trade imbalance and continue to move our economy forward.

"We must also win the war on terror at home and abroad, and continue to transfer power and security to the Iraqi people.

"In addition, the President is correct: we need to preserve and protect Social Security benefits for future generations. Establishing personal Social Security savings accounts is a viable and responsible solution.

"I do hope that the Social Security debate will not drown out other pressing domestic issues. We still need to preserve and protect our Medicare system from financial ruin. We have a severe energy crisis that must be addressed by reducing our dependence on foreign oil. We must continue to improve our education system. And our transportation infrastructure is not only hurting in Fairfield County, but throughout the country.

"With regard to Iraq, the election this past Sunday was a monumental event that should be encouraging to the Iraqi people and all those throughout the world that wish them well."
