Statement

Date: Oct. 16, 2014
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Foreign Affairs

U.S. Senators Tim Kaine, Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Near Eastern and South and Central Asian Affairs, and member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, and Angus King, a member of the Senate Armed Services and Intelligence Committees, have returned from a nine-day visit across the Middle East and South Asia that included stops in India, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Qatar.

"The opportunity to meet face-to-face with top government officials, economic leaders and civil society members across this critical region - including the brand new Afghan government leadership - was invaluable given my roles on the Armed Services and Foreign Relations Committees," said Kaine. "Much of our discussions across the region focused on the threat ISIL poses to regional and international security, making our final stop at the Combined Air and Space Operations Center in Qatar, where the coalition coordinates the campaign over Iraq and Syria, especially important. It was also an honor to spend time with Virginia servicemembers in Qatar supporting Operation Inherent Resolve against ISIL and those Virginians enabling the transition from direct combat operations to a train, advise, and assist mission in Afghanistan."
