Nick Di Iorio is running to unseat Democrat Carolyn Maloney in New York's twelfth congressional district -- a district that includes a westerly patch of Queens and eastern Manhattan (including NR HQ). In the spirit of a democratic clash of ideas, Di Iorio has accepted an invitation to debate Maloney at Columbia University, on the invitation of the Ivy League university's Republican and Democrat clubs. Maloney has not.

Said Di Iorio in a statement, "Simply running out the clock in the hopes that her money and her incumbency protects her is not acceptable." But that seems to be Maloney's strategy. Is that an indication of the type of courage Maloney can be expected to demonstrate if she wins another term?

And it's not just Maloney. As the New York Post editorialized last week, other Democrats in New York and surrounding states have proven less than enthusiastic about sparring with their Republican challengers.
