Part 2: Raising Standards is Good, But Common Core isn't the Answer

Senator Lee Zeldin, Republican and Conservative Party candidate for Congress in New York's First Congressional District, released the second of a three part series this week on three education issues that remind us why it's time for new leadership:

"As a New York State Senator, I have been an outspoken critic and led the fight against Common Core, introducing legislation to stop implementation in our schools. As your Congressman, I will take this fight to the federal level to protect my children and yours. When it comes to education, our children deserve the best opportunities.

As the father of twin, school-aged children, I believe in higher standards for our children, but Common Core is not the answer.

The federal government lured cash strapped states into signing on to Common Core by allocating billions in federal funding as the carrot. Standards were created nationally, tests were created by the states, curriculum set by school districts, and the communication between everyone has been horrendous. Additionally, too much of the material isn't age appropriate, especially for special education students. As a result, our students have been set up to fail and that is unacceptable to me.

The incumbent Congressman has done his part to make Common Core a reality in New York State and he should be held accountable for his support of this disaster of an education model. Our students deserve better."
