Bono Praises President Bush's State of the Union Address

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- "As the President outlined in his State of the Union address tonight, we have both the obligation and opportunity to make our country a safer and more prosperous nation not only for today's generation, but for tomorrow's as well. I was pleased to hear the President's forward-thinking agenda and open call to both sides of the aisle to work together to address the generational challenges before us. This year affords us the opportunity to put negativity aside and focus on policy that positively impacts the American people and I am pleased that the President is committed to doing just that."

"I was extremely pleased this week to witness an enormous step towards democratic rule in the Middle East. The success of the Iraqi democratic elections has provided a more confident hope that a lasting peace in this important region is possible. Images of Iraqi people proudly participating in the formation of their own democracy sent a strong message to the world and offered a renewed optimism for the future of the Iraqi people. I am proud to support the President's plan to ensure that their path to democracy is made safer and more sustainable."

"Domestically, we are facing a very challenging agenda. Immigration reform, creating economic momentum for job creation, tort reform, tax reform, passing a comprehensive energy policy, education initiatives, reducing the deficit, and social security reform are all difficult but necessary actions that will impact the welfare of generations of Americans. The Social Security program, in particular, is one of the most ambitious social programs this country has ever undertaken. It provides income security for millions of Americans: therefore, the future health of this system is of great interest to all our citizens and must be ensured. Recognizing the value and necessity of this system, I am pleased that the President is committed to acting sooner rather than later to make those changes that will ensure the long term viability of this program."

"The President is taking an active lead on these important measures and I look forward to working with my colleagues in Congress, along with the President and the constituents of the 45th district, as we address these important issues."
