Rangel Statement on Supreme Court Ruling Towards Marriage Equality

Statement

Date: Oct. 6, 2014
Location: New York, NY

Congressman Charles B. Rangel today released the following statement on the U.S. Supreme Court decision to deny review of circuit court rulings in favor of marriage equality in Indiana, Oklahoma, Utah, Virginia and Wisconsin, clearing the way for marriage equality in 30 states and the District of Columbia:

"Today's Supreme Court ruling is a significant victory in our fight towards equal rights, and moves our great nation forward in protecting liberty and justice for all.

Each year, more states eliminate discriminatory laws that have denied dignity and recognition to loving couples and families for far too long. The march of history is clear, and today's decision is in recognition of that fact.

While this is an occasion for celebration, there is more hard work to be done. We must urge Congress to pass the Respect for Marriage Act so that all people can love without discrimination. We must continue on our path towards progress and let nothing stand in the way of ensuring equality for all."
