U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-Ohio) released the following statement today in advance of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, wishing Ohio's Jewish community L'Shanah Tovah:

"As Rosh Hashanah begins tomorrow evening, Jane and I wish all those observing the holiday a Happy New Year. May this year be filled with health, happiness, prosperity and peace.

"It's critical that America continues to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Israel and its people as they serve as a beacon of freedom and democracy in the tumultuous Middle East."

Rosh Hashanah begins at sundown Wednesday and marks the beginning of the High Holidays in the Jewish faith. The blowing of the ritual ram's horn (shofar) signals the beginning of a 10-day period known as the Days of Awe -- a time of reflection -- that ends on Yom Kippur, a day of fasting and prayer.
