Issue Position: Jobs

Issue Position

Having created over 1,500 jobs right here in northeast Ohio and employed over 3,000 people, I know what it takes to grow American business and keep and create jobs for American workers. Like most Americans who have spent their career in the private sector, I understand that seventy percent of the jobs in our economy are created by small business owners--not by the government. Unfortunately, the failed economic agenda pursued by the White House since 2009 has attempted to shift the epicenter of America's economy from local small businesses to the federal government in Washington, D.C. through higher taxes, endless new regulations and a massive expansion of the size and scope of government. The abysmal results speak for themselves.

The President's health care law and other regulations being handed down from Washington are forcing many businesses to reduce employee hours in order to comply with the law's mandates, turning full-time work into part-time work at a time when we can least afford it. Consequentially, businesses are encountering issues expanding and being able to hire more emplyees, due to these government regualtions.

I will continue to advance solutions that will reduce overregulation that inhibits our job creators from hiring and expanding, put an end to the federal government's excessive spending spree, and pay down our growing $17 trillion debt.

The fact is that we cannot tax, spend or regulate ourselves into prosperity. For America's economy to recover we need elected officials who understand that the core strength of our economy lies with American workers and employers, not more career politicians who believe that Washington is the answer.

Keeping America Competitive:

For American companies and workers to succeed in a global economy, the federal government must allow American business to remain competitive. America has the second highest corporate tax rate in the world, and tax rate that repels new investment and job creation in the U.S., while pushing countless jobs and business overseas. I'm proud to stand with American workers and employers in the fight for much needed tax relief for American businesses.

Legislation:

Recently, I introduced the Flexibility to Promote Reemployment Act, a bipartisan bill that would encourage job creation by providing states with more flexibility to help unemployed individuals collect paychecks instead of benefit checks. This legislation is similar to the EMPLOY Act, a bill that I introduced last Congress which sought to create an employment incentive program to encourage employers to hire individuals eligible for unemployment compensation. The premise of the EMPLOY Act was included in the Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act of 2012.
Delaware Democratic Rep. John Carney and I introduced a bill that would make it easier for states to use their unemployment insurance money for programs that would allow benefit recipients to collect pay while getting on-the-job training.
