Issue Position: Ensuring Equality For All

Issue Position

We are the greatest nation on earth, founded on the beliefs of freedom and equality. We set the standard for the rest of the world, which is why it is unfathomable that in 2014 we are still debating equality. When I served in the City Council, I fought for legislation that called for a repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," voted against employment discrimination on the basis of pregnancy, and advocated for the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act. In Congress, I will continue:

Fighting for equal pay for equal work--As the father of three daughters, this is incredibly personal to me. I don't want my girls to grow up in a world where they make 77 cents to the dollar of every man for the same work. We are long over due to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act and other legislation to close this gap.

Championing a woman's right to make her own health care decisions

Achieving full LGBT equality--It is imperative that we fight to ensure equality across all spheres for men and women in the LGBT community, from recognition of marriage at the federal level to passing ENDA and ensuring equality in the workplace.

Establishing equal access voting rights--Too many times we hear stories of men and women who are registered to vote or qualify to register to vote, but are unable to obtain access to the polls. This is unacceptable. I will work with our local and community leaders to develop alternative ways to provide voters with access to the polls and to also develop programs that educate voters on their rights so they are not made to feel intimated or threatened when they vote.
