Long Backs Resolution Condemning President's Unlawful Exchange of Taliban Prisoners

Statement

Date: Sept. 9, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Rep. Billy Long voted in favor of a resolution condemning President Obama's unlawful exchange of Taliban prisoners.

"President Obama did not comply with the necessary legal requirements when he released five Taliban prisoners from Guantanamo Bay. The president violated the Fiscal Year 2014 National Defense Authorization Act by not seeking Congressional approval. The president's action to violate the 30 day notice requirement sets a dangerous precedent which has the potential to lead to more kidnappings of our servicemembers by terrorist organizations. Past history shows that prisoners released from Guantanamo Bay have returned to the battlefield," Long said.

The Government Accountability Office issued a report finding the president's release of five Taliban prisoners was a violation of the law.
