Rep. Israel Endorsed by the Coalition of Suffolk Police Unions

Press Release

Date: Sept. 17, 2014
Location: Syosset, NY

Today, Rep. Steve Israel (D-New York) received the unanimous endorsement of the Coalition of Suffolk Police Unions. Throughout his career, Rep. Israel has worked to make sure local police have the tools and the support they need to keep our communities safe.

Speaking on behalf of the Coalition of Suffolk Police Unions, Suffolk County PBA President Noel Digerolamo said: "Steve Israel has long been a friend of law enforcement. Rep. Israel knows what our members and our members' families are going through. Whether it's fighting to put more cops on the beat or working to get illegal guns out of the hands of criminals, we've always appreciated Rep. Israel's support and we know he is looking out for our officers and our community."

After receiving the endorsement, Israel said: "Washington's priorities are dangerously wrong when politicians oppose adding 50,000 new police officers to our streets in order to extend subsidies to special interests. Or when we endanger the lives of police officers by making it easier for guns to flood our streets. I know how valuable our local police departments are to our community, and I look forward to continuing our partnership."

As a powerful advocate in Washington, Israel is a leader in the fight for increased federal support for law enforcement and our first responders. Israel's commitment to local police runs in stark contrast to his opponent, Grant Lally. Lally claimed the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994, which funded 50,000 new police officers, was "unnecessary spending." Lally has also opposed criminal background checks for handgun purchases and supports huge cuts to federal law
enforcement grants.
