Date: Aug. 22, 2014
Location: Peabody, MA

Congressman John F. Tierney and Senator Elizabeth Warren today toured Opportunity Works in Newburyport to meet with staff and discuss their work connecting developmentally disabled adults with employment opportunities. During the visit, Congressman Tierney highlighted the recently passed Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, which, among other things, continues and strengthens the federal investment in disability-related workforce training, employment, and independent living programs.

"Organizations like Opportunity Works play an important role in Massachusetts by empowering developmentally disabled adults and connecting them with employment opportunities. I helped craft the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, which recently became law, and which continues our country's commitment to providing critical employment services to those individuals with disabilities. I look forward to continuing to work together with Opportunity Works," said Congressman John Tierney.

"Opportunity Works is a terrific organization that makes a real difference for many people with disabilities on the North Shore and throughout the Merrimack Valley," said Senator Warren. "I started out as a special needs teacher, and I understand how important it is to make sure people with disabilities have access to programs and services that allow them to live full and rich lives. The work done by organizations like Opportunity Works is powerfully important for our communities, and I'm very glad to have a chance to be here in Newburyport with Congressman Tierney today."

Opportunity Works of Greater Newburyport is a non-profit organization founded in 1974 to "enhance the quality of life for people with disabilities by promoting a culture of dignity and respect and ensuring individualized services that maximize the independence of the people they serve."
