3 Fresh Border Security Reminders Why It's Time to Term Limit Tim

Press Release

Date: Sept. 2, 2014

Senator Lee M. Zeldin, Republican and Conservative Party candidate for Congress in New York's First Congressional District, today released the first of a three part series of statements this week on three fresh border security reminders why it's time to Term Limit Tim:

"Last week, Newsday reported 2,200 unaccompanied immigrant children have surged onto Long Island so far this year. Currently, Long Island has the third highest amount of undocumented children in the entire country.

For anyone naive towards the growing challenges of life on Long Island, it is important to come to grips with the fact that the cost of sustaining our neighbors is making it increasingly difficult to make it here. Property taxes, education costs, social services and welfare costs are just some of the factors driving away our young families and seniors.

This humanitarian surge is beyond our local capabilities and emphasizes the need for immediate action to secure the border. We have laws in place for a reason, to protect our country and our citizens. Every nation's backbone is its rule of law. I'm all for legal immigration, but the amount of people flooding into our nation with no respect for our immigration laws is greatly concerning.

We need to detain these unaccompanied immigrant children humanely at the border and expeditiously reunite them with their parents in their home countries. This will require improved technology to allow for judges around the country to help reduce wait times for hearings. Border patrol agents need to be relieved of their baby sitting duties so they can go back to the jobs they were trained to do, securing our border.

Also, and very importantly, our nation needs to send a new message to Central and South American parents that we are not going to grant amnesty to their children when they come here alone. While I have a tremendous amount of compassion for all of the children around the world suffering from oppression and poverty, our nation simply does not have the bandwidth to take care of all the world's children in need. It would be great if we could, but we have many challenges here already that require our attention and focus.

After 12 years in office, my opponent has become part of the problem in Washington. We need a stronger voice in Washington, someone who is willing to work across the aisle to be a problem solver rather than a partisan warehouse of excuses and blame. As for the 2,200 immigrant children who just flooded Long Island this year, Tim Bishop prefers to defend the surge rather than confront it with leadership and action. It's time to Term Limit Tim.
