Hatch on President Obama's Speech on ISIS

Statement

Date: Sept. 10, 2014
Issues: Defense

U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) issued the following statement today in advance of President Obama's speech to the nation on the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS):

"The threat from ISIS in the Middle East has surged over the past year. The terrorist group has murdered countless numbers of civilians -- including two American journalists -- along the way to developing a regional stronghold. Despite ISIS's increase in strength, the Obama Administration has for too long failed to offer any strategic plan to combat this ruthless terrorist organization.

"Sadly, this lack of vision is representative of the Obama Administration's reactionary foreign policy agenda and its failure to have any overarching strategy in place to deal with unrest in the region, whether that is in Syria, Libya, Israel or elsewhere. This lack of American leadership in the Middle East has encouraged others -- such as ISIS -- to fill that void and we should have seen the impact that would have.

"So I hope the President will offer a strategic plan tonight on how he intends to confront the growing ISIS threat. In addition to continued airstrikes, what will American military action entail? What will cooperation from the international community look like? Will President Obama work with Congress to make sure our military has the resources they need to eliminate -- not just weaken -- ISIS? These are among the questions we all deserve to have answered, and I hope that will happen tonight."
