Issue Position: Debt and Deficit

Issue Position

Our national debt is now nearing $18 trillion, meaning every man, woman and child in the United States owes over $55,000 to the federal government. This mounting burden of debt drains our economy, crushes our job creators, hurts seniors and entrepreneurs while sticking our children and grandchildren with the bill.

As Mayor of Manchester, the City saw its first tax cut in a decade, reduced spending, all the while borrowing was cut in half. I fought hard to see the enactment of a spending cap and introduced four balanced budgets.

As a Member of Congress, I worked to bring that same common sense to Washington. During my term in Congress, I introduced a bill to cap federal spending, and helped craft budgets that would cut our deficits significantly, pay down our debt, and set our country on a path to prosperity. These efforts led to the first cut in spending for two consecutive years in over half a century while working to bring about changes to our short and long-term fiscal problems.
