Tonko to Host Grants Workshop for Local Fire Departments

Press Release

Location: Saratoga Springs, NY
Issues: Infrastructure

U.S. Congressman Paul D. Tonko along with representatives from U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand's office will host a workshop this Friday, September 12th, aiming to help potential applicants better understand the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program and its funding priorities. AFG regional representatives will discuss with attendees opportunities, evaluation criteria, registration, and answer questions pertaining to the program. The event flier is attached and there is no charge for this workshop.

"Capital Region first responders routinely put themselves in harm's way to save lives and property in our communities across the region," said Rep. Tonko. "For years, the AFG program has supported these brave men and women by providing well-earned grants for upgraded equipment, enhanced safety, and efficient operations at our local fire departments and emergency response facilities."

"AFG grants provide critical, life-saving equipment for our local fire stations," said Senator Gillibrand. "When our brave first responders have up-to-date equipment, they can perform their duties with greater ease and the entire department runs more efficiently. This workshop will help our local Capital Region fire stations get the support and resources they need to apply for grants, so they can get the tools they need to better serve their communities."

The primary goal of FEMA's Assistance to Firefighters Grant program is to meet the firefighting and emergency response needs of fire departments and nonaffiliated emergency medical service organizations. Since 2001, the AFG has provided approximately $5.6 billion in grants to first-responder organizations to obtain much-needed emergency response equipment, personal protective equipment, firefighting and emergency vehicles, research and training.
