U.S. Representatives Randy Hultgren (IL-14) and Peter Roskam (IL-06) invite all students, parents, teachers and school officials from the 14th and 6th Congressional Districts who are interested in learning more about our nation's service academies to attend Service Academy Day on Saturday, September 13, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at St. Charles East High School in St. Charles, Illinois.
"It is a distinct honor when our students are selected to our nation's top service academies, and I was thrilled that sixteen students I nominated were selected for the fall term," said Rep. Hultgren. "If a student desires to pursue this distinguished education and career, it is important they start the process early in their middle and high school careers. Service Academy Day provides interested families with essential information as they consider serving our country through military service."
"This is an opportunity for students considering a career of military service to learn about the host of possibilities available to them," said Rep. Roskam. "Attending one of the five Service Academies following high school graduation is a prestigious commitment of service and sacrifice to our country. My office is prepared to help guide students and their families through each step of the nomination process, and I look forward to helping those individuals interested in attending a service academy realize their potential and achieve their goals."
Presentations will be given by representatives from each academy--West Point, Naval Academy, Air Force Academy, Coast Guard Academy and the Merchant Marines Academy--along with an overview of how to apply. Each student and parent will have an opportunity to ask questions of academy representatives.
Also discussed will be the Congressional nomination process that is required for each applicant. This year, sixteen students Rep. Hultgren nominated from across the 14th District were selected and will be attending United States military service academies in the fall of 2014. More information on the nomination process is available on Rep. Hultgren's website here: http://hultgren.house.gov/serving-you/service-academy-nominations/service-academy-nominations-faq.
An appointment to a U.S. service academy requires at least a nine-year service obligation upon graduation. Selections are evaluated on character, scholarship, leadership and physical aptitude.
