Horsford Praises Construction Of Mt. Charleston Flood Control

Today, Representative Steven Horsford (NV-4) welcomed news that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will begin construction on a flood control project that will divert flood waters away from homes in the Mt. Charleston area. The project was able to move forward after the state of Nevada agreed to be the project sponsor and assume liability.

"I am pleased that we were able to work together at the local, state, and federal level to get construction moving on this vital project," Horsford said. "Mt. Charleston residents were devastated by these flash floods, and I hope this project will prevent similar disasters from occurring. I will continue to meet with local residents and businesses to identify a longer-term infrastructure solution to address the impacts of wild fires and flood control to safeguard the community."

Last July, the "Carpenter 1 Fire" burned over 28,000 acres of forest and grass lands in the Spring Mountain Range, and was not contained until September, 2013. The fire created a high risk of flash flooding and erosion in the area. Earlier this month, intense thunderstorms and rainfall created fast moving floodwaters, which destroyed roads and homes in the Rainbow and Kyle Canyon communities.

Rep. Horsford sent a letter to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers urging quick action to finalize a construction plan to build a flood control channel.

Construction of the project will begin in the next few weeks and will be completed this fall.
