Rep. Elizabeth Esty Decries Tea Party Obstruction in Congress

Statement

Date: Aug. 1, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Rep. Elizabeth Esty (CT-5) released the following statement in response to the failure of the U.S. House of Representatives to take comprehensive action on the border crisis.

"Tea Party extremists in Congress are recklessly standing in the way of addressing critical issues facing our country right now, particularly the humanitarian crisis at our southern border," Esty said. "It's irresponsible for the House Republican leadership to move forward with a five-week August recess without addressing these pressing issues. Congress needs to stay and do its job. We've made progress this week on addressing the issues at the VA and passing a short-term patch to keep the Highway Trust Fund from running dry. But the job's not done, and I'm prepared to stay here and work as long as it takes.

"Our country deserves better from my colleagues who are more committed to their ideological talking points than they are to working together to help the American people. I call on Tea Party Republicans in Washington to end their obstruction. We need to come together to find thoughtful, responsible solutions to resolve the serious challenges facing our country."

It is currently unclear whether the U.S. House of Representatives will vote today to address the crisis at the border.
