Issue Position: Protecting the Middle Class from a Property Tax Increase...

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2014

In the 126th legislature, a battle raged about whether we should increase your property taxes in order to preserve a fund set aside to pay for a Republican led tax cut for the wealthy.

South Portland was projected to lose $795,000 and Cape Elizabeth was looking at a $277,000 loss of municipal revenue sharing - this is money the state contributes back to municipalities, which represents 5% of collected sales tax and income taxes. If it is cut, the city has to increase our property taxes to be able to continue providing city services - plowing our roads, maintaining water and sewer services, and supporting our police and fire departments.

Fortunately, despite the Governor and the majority of Republican opposition's best effort to raise your property taxes to pay for tax cuts for the wealthy, we had enough support on the Democratic side to ensure your property tax bill doesn't go up as a result of a loss of municipal revenue sharing.
