A Voice for Women and Children

For representation to be fair and equitable for the 50% of the population who are female, we need to do better than 17 women in every 100 legislators. Studies suggest that our political process would benefit from hearing the voices of women.

It is a sad reality that in the United States it is necessary to have a Children's Defense Fund (childrensdefense.org) to speak for and defend the 20% of our children who are in poverty. Seniors fought hard for social security and Medicare, which cut their poverty rate in half. So we know that supporting those in need is both possible and practical, particularly because the connection between poverty and low educational achievement has been well documented.

To support women and children, we need to:

Elect more women to serve in government leadership
Put women on legislative boards and panels that deal with women's health
Create more family sustaining jobs to lift families out of poverty
Support the health, education and welfare of our most vulnerable citizens
Re-ignite efforts to end child poverty
