James Lee Witt, Democratic candidate for Congress, released the following statement regarding the anniversary of the passage of the Voting Rights Act on Aug. 6, 1965.

"Today is an important day in our nation's history. The Voting Rights Act is one of the greatest pieces of legislation ever passed by Congress," said Witt. "We must remain steadfast in our commitment to never again permit racial prejudices in our electoral process. The right of every legal voter to cast their ballot must be undeniable."

The Voting Rights Act was passed on Aug. 6, 1965, under President Lyndon B. Johnson. This landmark piece of legislation prohibits racial discrimination in the voting process. The purpose of the bill was to enforce voting rights given to citizens in the 14th and 15th Amendments to the U.S. Constitution. This law specifically prohibits any state or local government from imposing any voting law that results in discrimination against racial minorities.
